Shopping for a wedding photographer is not like selecting a gown or a bridal bouquet. You can see something tangible before you make your decision when you're shopping for products. You can try on the dress and see and smell the flowers. But in the selection of your photographer, you're often at the mercy of a super-salesperson and/or your own intuition.

Unlike the tangibles, you cant see the end result first. Never has there been anything written that gives you, the bride, a true guideline as to how to select the one person who could supply you with a heart full of memories to last a lifetime.

Does Your Photographer Do ONLY Weddings or Landscapes and Other Stuff?

Make sure you hire a photographer who specializes in weddings. Your photographer should be experienced in wedding procedures and familiar with your ceremony and reception sites. This will allow him/her to anticipate your next move and be in the proper place at the right time to capture all the special moments. Personal rapport is extremely important.

The photographer may be an expert, but if you don't feel comfortable or at ease with him or her, your photography will reflect this. Comfort and compatibility with your photographer can make or break your wedding day and your photographs!

When you look at the photographers portfolio, pay attention to key elements. Did they capture the excitement and emotion of the newly-married couple? Look at albums ready to be delivered, or proofs of weddings recently photographed. Note the photographer's style. Some photographers are known for formal poses, while others specialize in more candid, creative shots. Some can do both. The wedding album is much like a story guide, unfolding the story of your wedding.

Compare prices, but keep in mind, photography is expensive. Since wedding photographers usually operate on an up-front fee for the wedding, make sure you're going to get quality as much as you're going to make sure you get the right price.

These are images of your most important day. If a photographer's work doesn't move you, move on! Beautiful wedding memories are more than just a few great images. This is not the time to compromise on quality, so ask yourself, "How well does the wedding photographer capture the story?
